Some Winners & Losers are obvious this week, as candidates for the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives disclosed how they've done as fundraisers over the last three months. Republican Senate candidate Dick Zimmer, with $411K cash on hand, is struggling. So is his Democratic opponent, incumbent Frank Lautenberg, who has just $1.3M in his war chest -- not much for a four-term Senator. But Lautenberg can self finance, and Zimmer says he can't.

Democrat John Adler is a clear winner: he's raised $1.9 million for his third district race -- that's more than any non-incumbent candidate nationally. His GOP rival for the House seat Democrats haven't won since 1882, Chris Myers, has $150,000 left after a tough primary. In the 7th district, Linda Stender is way ahead in the money game. Republican Leonard Lance has less than $81K in the bank -- not enough to run a race for Sheriff in a politically competitive county.

Kudos to the Blind Rabbi, Dennis Shulman, who has raised $585K in his very uphill fight against Scott Garrett. And to Christopher Smith, the 14-term GOP incumbent in the 4th district, who is taking Josh Zeitz seriously and now has $500K in his campaign treasury.

How could you possibly call Jon Corzine a "winner" for fundraising at Bob Torricelli's farm. Did you purposely fail to mention that that was the "former United States Senator" you were referring to?

Or, were you trying to be a little too cute by half?

Similarly, ever calling James Devine a "winner" under any circumstances whatsoever, is simply risible.

Finally, and very unfortunately, you should have listed the State of New Jersey in the downside column this week, because economic forecasters at Rutgers are now saying were heading into a recession.

NEW BRUNSWICK — New Jersey's economy, struggling with soaring energy costs and a faltering housing market, is headed for a mild recession that will last until 2010, Rutgers University researchers said Wednesday.

The prediction of impending job losses puts off any hope of a recovery in the real estate market. Housing prices are expected to fall 12 percent to 15 percent during the next year, experts said.

. . .

That would be the recession caused by the utterly irresponsible economic policies of Messrs. Corzine, Codey (who bears a significant personal portion of the blame for the period when he was the "Acting" Governor) and Roberts.

I'd say the voters of Orange are the real losers this week - they're the ones who have to shell out Hawkins salary. And they're the ones who put him in office. What's he losing - a lower tax bracket?

A Proposed Resolution?

Are we seeing a pattern here? Here's a possible proposal:

WHEREAS, it is quite clear that the assembled commenters on this post hale from demonstrably different backgrounds and views, ones that clearly establish that they may fairly be described as of various and sundry political persuasions; and,

WHEREAS, it further being clear that, in spite of those differences, said commenters, have all agreed in principal (at least so far) that there are one or more holes in the reasoning and conclusions of this aforesaid post; now, therefore,
